Cacao

The best time to visit and the main harvest months are still being confirmed.

Where does the cacao come from? Is it organic?

The bars come from the grinding room in Pacuarito. Whether the cacao is certified organic is being confirmed.

What is cacao?

Cacao is the seed of the cacao tree's fruit, which grows in the humid tropics, like Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. The fruit is called a pod: inside are the seeds wrapped in a sweet pulp. Chocolate comes from those seeds.

How is chocolate made?

In general: the pod is harvested, the seeds are removed, fermented and dried, then roasted, ground, and the paste is tempered and molded. On the tour you experience it in four gestures: open, smell, grind, taste.

Minah's

What is Minah's?

Minah's is an Afro-Caribbean heritage cocoa experience in Pacuarito, Limón, Costa Rica: a family farm where you walk the whole path of cacao — from pod to bar — and a chocolate that takes that story home.

Where does the name Minah's come from?

Minah's is named after the matriarch of the family that looks after this cacao farm. Minah's legacy isn't inherited: it's cultivated, day by day. That's why the tour ends where it begins: at Minah's house.

What are the four gestures?

Open. Smell. Grind. Taste. The four gestures of the workshop: open the pod, smell the fresh cacao, grind the bean on stone and taste. Four gestures that become a ritual.
